11th Agassiz International Agassiz Chamber Music Festival
Celebrating the 200th Anniversary of the birth of Robert
Schumann
with Resident Canadian Composer - Steven Gellman
All concerts are at
Eckhardt-Gramatté Hall,
University of Winnipeg, 515 Portage Avenue.
As we enter our second decade as a
music Festival here in the centre of Canada, it’s rewarding
to think from whence we’ve come, and to where we’re going.
Back in 2000, our festival began at the University of
Manitoba presenting three concerts, and next June our
fabulous Agassiz team, working with the Cultural Capital of
Canada Committee, will present the 2011 International Cello
Festival of Canada, a Festival which will welcome a host of
internationally renowned master cellists to the city, for
more than 20 events, and for more than a week. Cello heaven
- I can’t wait!
However, back to the more immediate
future and to this year’s Festival, in which we will be
celebrating the music of the quintessential romantic genius,
Robert Schumann. His highly personal works offer some of the
most beautiful, poetic and moving music of his time. We are
delighted to be welcoming new Agassiz friends: Andrew Wan,
recently appointed concertmaster of the Montreal Symphony;
Winnipeg’s celebrated baroque icon and harpsichordist, Eric
Lussier; our first resident composer, the winner of the
UNESCO Prize for Composition and former Canadian Composer of
the Year, Steven Gellman; and one of the most celebrated
clarinetists in the world, James Campbell. International
star soprano, Valdine Anderson, returns along with Agassiz
favourites Aaron Au, Max Fleischman, Dave Harding, Anne
Robert and Stéphane Lemelin - all hosted by CBC’s northern
light, Andrea Ratuski. To name a few musical highlights,
don’t miss our final work, the heroic Dohnanyi Piano
Quintet, the powerfully dramatic and lyrically beautiful
music of Steven Gellman, the sultry Argentinian tango music
of Piazzolla and that tumultuous chamber music masterpiece –
the Brahms G major String Quintet.
Come and join us, and be swept away
by the passionate and evocative music of many of the
greatest musical creators of the last 300 years!
